4 Home Cleaning Myths: Do They Actually Work?

home cleaning myth

With plenty of cleaning hacks available online, daily housekeeping may seem simple at a glance. Even from word-of-mouth, you’ll want to give any tips and tricks, as recommended by your friends and family, a try. But did you know that some of these hacks could be myths and misconceptions that may not necessarily work depending on what you are cleaning? To help you maximise your cleaning time effectively, we’ve summed up the top four cleaning myths and the reasons behind why they may or may not work.

1. I can use baking soda to clean anything

We’ve all heard people say that they can clean anything with a bit of elbow grease and baking soda, but is it really true? Strictly speaking, no. For instance, as an abrasive cleaner, it might not be all that suitable for your floors. The thing about baking soda is that it can wear away the sealant on wood floors very easily, leaving your wood exposed to stains and scratches. It can also destroy the finish on marble surfaces so you need to be extra careful when using it to clean.

In general, baking soda has also been known to leave behind a white residue if you forget to do a final wipe down with a damp cloth, which might leave your surfaces worse off than when you started. Lastly, while vinegar can be a handy substitute for baking soda at times, its high acidity may also make it unsuitable for granite, marble and floor cleaning in Singapore.

While an all-in-one cleaning solution might seem attractive, in this instance it’s a case of too good to be true.

2. Scrubbing can help to get rid of tough stains

Remember how we mentioned elbow grease above? Well, you have to be careful with that too. Scrubbing away stains on your furniture might seem like a good idea when it comes time for sofa cleaning, but did you know that sometimes it can actually drive the dirt deeper.

The truth is, upholstery cleaning is always a tricky task. We’ve previously covered how to maintain different sofa types because we know just how tough it can be without a guide or a helping hand. If you need more assistance in removing stubborn stains and reviving your furniture, it’s best to bring in professional cleaning services to help with sofa cleaning and upholstery cleaning. Even for things like luxury bags, you’ll surely want to avoid scrubbing the material and damaging it. Treat it with care instead and opt for bag cleaning services.

3. I just need to add more detergent for cleaner clothes

It’s a complete myth that the more detergent you add the cleaner your clothes will be. Using too much laundry detergent will often leave behind unsightly residue on your clothing, meaning you’ll have to wash them again to ensure they’re clean.

This is not only annoying but also bad for the environment and your wallet as you waste both water and detergent during the process. Just think about how frustrating it would be to do a difficult load of bulky laundry only to find that you need to redo it. In some cases, certain items are too big for normal washing machines to handle anyway and can end up overloading the machine. For heavy-duty laundry cleaning, consider reliable laundry and dry-cleaning services in Singapore that will deliver clean, freshly packed clothes.

4. I usually wipe my windows and mirrors with newspapers

You’re not alone. Cleaning and polishing mirrors or glass surfaces with newspapers is a fairly common trick of the trade. Unfortunately, in many cases, this technique can leave behind streaks – which is pretty frustrating when you find yourself wiping the same area on the same surface multiple times.

Realistically, there are more convenient ways to go about glass-surface or mirror cleaning in Singapore. Our favourite option is using a microfibre cloth. It’s gentle and thorough, plus it’s also super handy to have on hand as it can be used on other types of furniture besides windows. For instance, your curtains. Although, if you think your curtains need a proper clean, it’s best to take them to a dry cleaning service in Singapore.
